Who We’re Looking For?
Are you a curious storyteller who knows your city inside out? Do you have a passion for capturing the ways technology is shaping your community’s culture, language, and traditions? We want reporters who already live in Africa’s major cities and can find stories that only a local could tell.
Priority Cities:
- Nigeria: Lagos, Abuja
- Kenya: Nairobi
- Rwanda: Kigali
- Ghana: Accra, Kumasi
- South Africa: Johannesburg, Cape Town
- Egypt: Cairo
What You’ll Do?
- Pitch story ideas about how technology is changing life, work, and culture within your city or region (within ~100km of where you live).
- Produce multimedia stories per month, each including:
- A well-researched article (1,200–1,500 words) with interviews from at least three local sources.
- Original, high-quality photos that capture the story’s setting and people.
- 2+ engaging videos (in both portrait and landscape formats) suitable for social media.
- Submit a simple budget for each story, keeping costs low and travel minimal.
- Use your smartphone for photos and videos (we provide a small equipment and data stipend if needed).
- Work with local community members, tech hubs, or cultural groups to get authentic perspectives.
How You’ll Be Paid?
Per Story Package (all-inclusive): $300–$400
- Writing & Research: $120–$180
- Photos: $1–$5 per photo (depends on creativity and quality)
- Video: $10–$50 per clip (depends on creativity, length, and quality)
- Other Costs Covered: Up to $140 for local transport, data, or paying a local guide/fixer if needed
Extra Rewards:
- $20 bonus for stories using local languages
- $15 bonus for submitting all raw footage and files
- 5% bonus if your story gets more than 1,000 unique readers in a month
Who Should Apply?
- You’ve lived in your city or region for at least two years (please provide proof if needed).
- You have a strong network—connections with local tech spaces, community leaders, or cultural groups.
- You can write clearly in English.
- You know how to take sharp photos and videos with your phone, and you’re comfortable editing them with basic apps.
- You care about telling true, respectful, and impactful stories.
Bonus if you:
- Speak at least one local language
- Have published stories or photos about technology, business, or culture
- Are a member of a local press or journalist association
- Have experience working with community organizations

- A short explanation (max 300 words) of a story you’d like to cover about how technology is changing your community.
- A simple budget for how you’d spend up to $100 on local costs for this story.

2) Interview:
If selected, you’ll have a short video call with our editors.
3) Trial Assignment:
We’ll pay you $200 to produce a short test story.
